Alto Maniac

Image
pic from sodahead.com There was a village girl who loves to sing alto. When her sister sings as they do the household chores, she would join in by singing the alto part. She did the same with her parents and brother. Only her brother was not too happy with this habit. He didn’t like her disturbing him with her alto, to each and every song he sings or hums. He knew that she doesn’t know any ‘do’ ‘re’ ‘mi’. But he’d admit that there is at least some sense of an alto part in her singings. He would get more irritated when she’s singing a song alone and instead of soprano, her good-for-nothing sister is singing the alto part to herself. ‘For goodness’ sake, can there be an alto solo song?’ He’d yell at her.    Her habit continued when she went to the college in town. She loved going for worship service on Saturday nights, Sunday mornings, and Sunday evenings because she gets the opportunity to sing alto. The weekday prayer meetings were also opportunities for singin...

The Chief Guest

Notown received the Government’s nod to construct a badminton stadium. The people of this sleepy town rejoiced as, finally, they were going to see some development activity.    The construction work was given to the PS of the Parliamentary Secretary who was representing the assembly constituency of this area. Through coughs and puffs, a badminton stadium finally took shape and filled the landscape of Notown. It became the most prominent structure in the town when viewed from Google Earth. The day for inauguration came and the choice for Chief Guest naturally fell on the standing legislator from the constituency, the Parliamentary Secretary. The stage was set and everything was in place to receive the Chief Guest. The EAC was there and all the government department heads were in station. Town Adhoc Council and all the NGOs were represented; many of them having put on traditional waist coats. The town Pastor had taken his seat to pronounce the o...

Oops she did it again!

Image
from foxnews.com I grew up in the era of 'Oops I Did It Again', so it is amusing to see in the news what the song does to the Somali Pirates. As soon as the pirates hear the song played, they must be saying to one another, ‘ABORT MISSION, ABORT MISSION, NO HIJACKING TODAY’.  Some would plug their ears with cotton while some would use their palms. The news report says, ‘as soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney, they move on as quickly as they can... Pirates will go any lengths to avoid or try to overcome the music’. The merchant navy has found a new tool to counter hijacking cargo ships by Somali Pirates. They don’t need guns. They just aim speakers at the Pirates and play Britney. The Somali Pirates’ disgust for western culture, particularly Britney’s music does the job. I want to see the look on their faces when those Pirates hear Britney played. It must be really something. The disgust for a particular music which deters them from hijacking all that’s i...

Writing at the speed of thought

Image
my beautiful pfutsero (July 2012) What do you do when you want to write but you have nothing to write? What do you do when you want to write something thoughtful but you can’t think of anything? This is what you can do: You start to write that you want to write but you can’t think of anything to write. And so you keep on writing whatever comes to mind although they may not be making much sense. You don’t pause to think, but you just keep on typing away. No. You don’t stop to think. You just let your fingers roll over the keyboard. Now. What do you have? You already have a paragraph. Wonderful. Now, you press Enter and start the next paragraph. Ok. A new paragraph and nothing yet to write about. Ok. How did you spend your day today? I went to hospital to look after a sick relative who was operated yesterday. Ok. I’m into something. I don’t know if this relative of mine should be called ‘cousin’. I’m really bad at this. I don’t know who to call a cousin, a nephew, a niece. I even...

This is from Ice Age IV. As the 'ice ship' was tossed about in the ocean by a violent storm, Sid cried out this memorable line: If I don't make it, find me a wife, and tell her I love her.

Solo drive to Imphal in a fantasy F1 race

For a day in a long time, there was time to kill. The only thing to do for the day was to reach Imphal in one piece. So, I filled my tank, updated my facebook status, and drove. As I crossed Lerie gate at Kohima, I set the meter to zero to see for myself the distance between Kohima and Imphal. Left to myself with no music system in the ‘powerless-steeringed’ Bolero Invader, I tried to do what I proposed to do in my facebook status, i.e. to contemplate on the bigger questions of life. To ponder on existential question like, ‘why is there something instead of nothing?’ or ‘why did the chicken cross the road?’ But I kept searching; searching for things to click. After frequent stops, I decided to just drive; else I won’t reach Imphal before dark.  Then I imagined if I were in an F1 race. I started on P30 (assuming that 29 cars have gone ahead of me this day) opting to start on the soft tyres. Soon I was up to P25. But frequent stops for photo shoot kept pulling me back the grid...

Zero Bulb Ideas (4): Power Back-up Plan

Image
‘Don’t watch movies on television’, my sister advises, ‘you will not be able to complete a single movie’. That is the situation of electricity supply in the great Capital city of Kohima. Very few works get done in offices because most of the works are done in the computer. Stomachs grumble because of half cooked rice. This happens because like movie watching experience, halfway through cooking in electric rice cookers, power goes off and not many cooks have mastered the technique of cooking the later half through a different source (firewook or LPG). It has been heard that the Power Minister and a handful of other big shots are on a Generator/Inverter buying spree to power their houses. Rumours are heard that someone has an Inverter which can run a saw mill. Also gossips are heard that if the present government returns to power, they are going to project in their action plan for the next financial year to procure Inverters for each household. Electricity will be supplied for a f...

King of the barber’s shop

As he entered the salon for a shave, Pyarelal *, Bholenath *, and Sukharam * wished him, ‘Good morning sir’, ‘Good morning sir’, and ‘Good morning sir’. I couldn’t turn to see who is entering as I was having a haircut. All he uttered in reply to the barbers’ rapid fire Good mornings were, ‘mmmm’, ‘mmmm’, and ‘mmmm’.  He ha d a commanding, b ass voice. After a quick shave, he offered to pay with another 'mmmm' but the barbers refused to accept the money. He said, ‘Hojaiga?’ and left. While paying for my haircut, I asked my barber, ‘who was he?’ . By then, I was already thinking of writing this post . He asked his colleagues but none of them could give me any detail. I don't know if he was an important man or a munnab hai . he had a sidekick too. He was at least a very important man to the barbers. He was king of the barber’s shop this morning.  *I don’t know any of their names.
